Otavalo
The area known as Otavalo contains one of the more well-known markets in Ecuador's highlands. A trade stop since pre-Incan times, the market now sells artisan crafts and weavings from local people. There's also a local animal market where animals and agricultural supplies are bought and sold between area farmers. For those wishing to stay overnight and explore the area further, Hacienda Pinsaqui is a great place to rest your head. A hotel and restaurant with llama pastures, horseback riding and great views, the hacienda is a popular destination for international visitors and Ecuadorian nationals alike. If you are driving to Otavalo from Quito, you can stop and set foot on the actual equator line in Ecuador. It's a fun activity for those wanting to experience a little science and geography during their trip to the Ecuadorian highlands.
